One day in the life of a Milanese foodie: Valentina Tosoni

Valentina Tosoni
Journalist for La Repubblica, Visual Desk, Gruppo Gedi

With a professional career in the publishing world, I’m lucky enough to discover and share surprising and unique stories and experiences. Often over a coffee. I spend the day between work commitments and family. In the morning I go to the office late. Once the children are in school and the family prep is done, I indulge in an excellent espresso with organic pastries from Cofficina in Corso di Porta Ticinese 58. There I indulge in my breakfast and find the inspiration to face the day.

My day continues with meetings, phone calls and interviews. I try to be as efficient as possible, so I can enjoy an aperitif with friends before going home for dinner.

In Milan the choice is endless. I generally head to the Navigli area or the Savona-Tortona district. I often go to Rita in via Angelo Fumagalli: good drinks and a nice atmosphere.

A couple of times a week I spend an evening at the cinema or theatre; art is a form of communication that has always fascinated me. Thanks to this, I’ve been able to deepen my knowledge of coffee and its many nuances.

In 2015, I curated the ORIGIN photographic exhibition. The arrangement consisted of 16 shots by photographer Jakob de Boer depicting daily life of coffee farmers in the Songwa Estates estate: a coffee plantation in Tanzania.

Now, wherever it is, every time I order a cup I appreciate what is served even more.

Being a coffee as well as a food lover, living in a versatile, dynamic and constantly evolving city like Milan, I am often looking for one of the most fashionable restaurants of the moment. I have recently had dinner at Basara, in via Tortona. The Japanese chef cleverly mixes Japanese and Western cuisine. His dishes are original, refined and simple at the same time, with unique flavors. A tasting experience that I highly recommend.

For after dinner, however, one of my favorite places is Sixième Bistro – a concept store, flower shop and design studio - where they make the best gin tonic in the city. You cannot leave Milan without trying them!
