The coffee scene in Milan is still very tied to tradition, but there is an undeniable shift towards the new. Coffee shops have now become work spaces and meeting places in Italy, as they are in other capitals of the world. I remember years ago in New York we would meet up with colleagues in cafés – it was a unique experience at the time!
Our favorite coffee places to meet friends are Bar Basso, Jamaica and Cova - traditional bars full of history - where we always feel at home. Sometimes we meet clients too, because the informal and welcoming environment puts everyone at ease.
If we were to design a specialty coffee shop,we would choose materials like stone and wood, which, associated with a color palette in shades of gray would communicate freshness.
If we had to choose our favourite design object from the coffee world it would be the Moka Pot. It perfectly embodies our philosophy of #allisdesign: that within everyday life objects we can still find beauty in design.
If we were to take any designer, past or present, for a coffee we would choose Achille Castiglioni, one of the greatest Italian designers who ever lived. His approach to design - creative, rigorous but full of lightness - is a constant inspiration for us. A great lover of innovation, we believe he would be very happy with the cosmopolitan Milan we all know today.
